Eric Holder and Marc Elias Discuss NRAF Redistricting Lawsuits

Washington, D.C.—Today Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), and Marc Elias, voting rights litigator and founder of Democracy Docket, hosted a press call to discuss three lawsuits filed yesterday supported by the National Redistricting Action Fund (NRAF), NDRC’s 501(c)(4) affiliate.

The lawsuits – filed in Louisiana, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania – seek to ensure that the court is ready to move forward with its own process of drawing new maps in the likely event these states reach an impasse on redistricting due to their divided government.

“The maps drawn throughout this process will set the tone for the next decade of American politics at the state and federal level,” said Attorney General Holder. “We are going to do everything in our power to protect the integrity of this process, and to ensure that the maps across the country are fair. These lawsuits are just the first of many, many steps the NDRC and our affiliate organizations will be taking in the coming weeks and months to ensure the redistricting process is not subverted by politicians who want to hold onto power at the expense of fair representation of voters.”

“The bottom line is that these cases are ensuring that our voter-plaintiffs in Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Louisiana are not forced to vote on unlawful lines and are not deprived of their right to cast an equal vote,” said Marc Elias. “While voters should always have the right to vote on equal footing, the political reality in these states, the population shifts throughout the states and the release of the 2020 census results, made clear these courts should step in and guarantee that they will protect these bedrock principles.”
