Pennsylvania Supreme Court Agrees to Take Up NRAF-Supported Lawsuit
Washington, D.C. — Today, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court agreed to take up the National Redistricting Action Fund (NRAF)-supported impasse lawsuit, Carter v. Degraffenreid, which asks the court to adopt a new congressional map based on 2020 Census data. Under Pennsylvania law, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court may assume, at its discretion, extraordinary jurisdiction over a matter of immediate public importance that is pending before one of the Pennsylvania courts.
“Our democracy is premised on free and fair elections. Pennsylvanians deserve the right to vote for a candidate of their choosing in fair, lawful districts,” said Marina Jenkins, Director of Litigation and Policy for the NRAF. “Pennsylvania’s current map is malapportioned and the state has lost a congressional seat – meaning that new districts are an absolute must – yet the Republican-led legislature did not do the necessary work to produce a fair map that could be approved by the governor. The Court’s order today appropriately expedites the process to ensure that Pennsylvanians will be able to vote in compliant districts in the 2022 election.”
