Ohio Redistricting Commission’s State Legislative Maps Again Spite Reforms, Earn Bipartisan Opposition

Washington, D.C. -- Today, Marina Jenkins, the Director of Litigation and Policy for the National Redistricting Action Fund (NRAF), released the following statement in response to the Ohio Redistricting Commission’s second set of state legislative maps, which were passed with only Republican support and earned bipartisan opposition:

“This marks the third time that Republican Commissioners have failed to do their job: negotiate in good faith and produce fair state legislative maps that accurately reflect the will of Ohioans. They have everything they need to draw fair maps: clear guidelines, a selection of perfectly reasonable maps to choose from, and Democratic colleagues ready and willing to negotiate. Yet here we are once again, with Republicans on the Commission obstinately refusing to respect the 2015 reform, the voters who passed it, or the court. And here we are once again, with another set of maps designed to give Republicans the upper hand no matter what the voters want. It should not be lost on the public that all of this could have come to an end long ago if the Republican Commissioners had worked with their colleagues, respected their constitution, and did their jobs. Instead, they chose a dubious, partisan solution that mocks the reform Ohioans voted for – as indicated by the bipartisan opposition on the Commission. It is time for the partisan games to end, and for the Commissioners to adopt fair maps, as required by law.”
