Eric Holder: Ohio Redistricting Commission’s State Legislative Maps Don’t Adhere to Reforms

Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, released the following statement in response to the Ohio Redistricting Commission’s final state legislative maps, which were passed on a party-line vote with only Republican support:

“The state legislative maps drawn by the Republican commissioners once again arrogantly snub the reforms enshrined in the Ohio Constitution and they blatantly ignore the order issued by the state’s supreme court. They could have selected reasonable maps that appropriately reflect the preferences of Ohio voters, several of which were presented to them during this process. But instead of reaching bipartisan consensus, the Republican commissioners again chose the partisan path of maps that are manipulated in their party’s favor and that fly in the face of the requirements in the state constitution and the Ohio Supreme Court’s order. These Republicans are afraid to face in fair elections the people they are supposed to serve. Ohioans deserve better.”
