Ohio Supreme Court Strikes Down Commission’s Fourth Set of State Legislative Maps

Washington, D.C. –  Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, released the following statement in response to the Ohio Supreme Court striking down the Ohio Redistricting Commission’s fourth set of gerrymandered state legislative maps, which were redrawn in response to a previous state Supreme Court order:

“The arrogance of Republican members of the Redistricting Commission is again on full display. Instead of adopting fair maps that were drawn by independent map makers as ordered by the Supreme Court, the Commissioners continued last week with their ridiculous partisan efforts - resulting in a fourth rejected map. It is obvious what is afoot here. Republicans are trying to run out the clock by perpetuating this unnecessary and unconstitutional deadlock. They hope to have the Ohio Supreme Court bend to their will or have some other, friendly court intervene and put in place their map that is clearly at odds with the state Constitution. Their mockery of the redistricting process is egregious. The people of Ohio deserve better, and the Court's decision is yet another victory for voters and a step in the right direction towards achieving a fair map. The Court, and all Ohioans, must stand strong in the face of this attempt to rig our democracy.”
